Naomi an Illustration Sketchbook

 Exercise 5.2  Making connections  I returned to my sketchbook pages to find material that I could recycle, collage, collect for this exercise.  My tutor in feedback suggested I sketch people as much as I could moving forward. So I return to the existing sketchbook pages I have of people moving on a street. As rapid sketches, I am pleased with how they look, however looking at them again they do appear isolated. Perhaps through collage I could make efforts to place the figures somewhere interesting.  I decided to start by photocopying the sketchbook pages so I have a number of sheets to work with. I then put the figures to one side and returned to my sketchbooks to find further material.  This was a teabag experiment of Big Ben. At the time I decided it was unsuccessful.  Exercise 5.0 Taking Stock  I collected together all of my sketchbooks so far and went through them page by page. I collected my notes together and documented the key areas here.  Informative I reflected on drawing outside in public spaces for assignment 3. I found the standing and positioning myself super challenging. I made efforts to move around, a lot, collecting as much information as I could at various locations.  I didn't like how stale the drawings were as this point, mainly because I felt a stiffness whilst drawing on the page.  I like all of the seeds of ideas I collected though and they did act as a starting point for a more imaginative way forward.  Narrative  I didn't like my first sketches taken on location.  Research Task 5.0  Visual Language  Alice Wellinger  Alice Wellinger is an award winning Austrian based Illustrator. With a surreal and comtemporary approach to her personal work, she works emotively to produce pieces that reflect and contend with the burdens of life, real life issues with an ironic twist. Works also touch on connections with childhood years.  The collection of work that I most engaged with are 'The burden of debts'.  Here the paintings depict how enormous the burden of money can be to one life.  'Sleepless night's' depicts a young woman sat up in her bed. She looks head on into an enormous, billowing wave. The wave is so strong that it has lifted the bed off the ground, the lady has no choice but to ride the wave from her bed. There is no rest here as to me, the wave will only get bigger in its force. They stare each other in the eye.
